Banner and headline (20 points)
  1. 1.My banner says who I help or the result I deliver, not a stock photo or blank image.

  2. 2.My headline says what I do and who for, not just "Founder at Company".

About (18 points)
  1. 3.The first two lines of my About (before "see more") say who I help and the result.

  2. 4.My About ends with a clear next step: how to work with me or contact me.

Featured (16 points)
  1. 5.My Featured section has three or more items such as a case study, press, a strong post or a talk.

  2. 6.At least one Featured item leads to a booking page, form or contact path.

Experience (14 points)
  1. 7.My current role is described in outcomes or numbers, not a list of duties.

  2. 8.My company pages are linked, so the logo shows on my current and past roles.

Activity (20 points)
  1. 9.I posted at least four times in the last 30 days.

  2. 10.My posts speak to my buyers' problems, not only company news or reposts.

Recommendations (12 points)
  1. 11.I have three or more recommendations from clients, investors or peers, not only colleagues.

  2. 12.At least one recommendation is from the last 12 months.

What The Stranger Test measures

When a founder sends a cold message, joins a call or is mentioned in a newsletter, the first thing most people do is open their LinkedIn profile. The Stranger Test checks the six parts of your profile they read first, in roughly the order they read them: the banner and headline, the About section, Featured, Experience, recent activity and recommendations. Each part is checked with two plain yes or no questions that you can answer by looking at your own profile for a couple of minutes.

How your score is calculated

Every check is worth between 4 and 10 points and all twelve add up to 100. Banner and headline carry 20 points, About 18, Featured 16, Experience 14, activity 20 and recommendations 12. A score under 40 means a stranger cannot tell what you do or why they should trust you. Between 40 and 69 your profile gets you noticed but does not close the gap. From 70 it reads as credible, and above 90 it does most of the persuading before you say a word. The test is self-scored, so it is only as honest as your answers, and a high score does not guarantee leads.

The 12 checks and how to fix each one

1. Banner that says who you help

Most founders leave the banner blank or use a stock photo, which wastes the largest piece of real estate on the page. A good banner answers who you help and what changes for them in one line.

Fix: replace it with a simple banner that states your audience and outcome in plain words, readable on a phone.

2. Headline that says what you do and who for

The headline travels with every comment, message and search result, so it does more work than any other line. 'Founder at Company' tells people your title and nothing about why they should care.

Fix: write it as who you help plus the result, then your role, for example 'I help B2B fintech teams cut onboarding time in half | Founder, Example Co' (an invented example).

3. About opening that names who you help

Only the first two lines of your About show before 'see more', and most readers never click.

Fix: open with who you help and the result, then tell the story underneath.

4. About that ends with a next step

A reader who is interested needs to know what to do next.

Fix: finish with one clear sentence on how to work with you and one way to reach you.

5. Three or more Featured items

Featured is the only place on your profile where you choose what a stranger sees first.

Fix: add three to five items such as a case study, a press mention, your strongest post or a talk.

6. A Featured path to a conversation

At least one item should turn interest into a conversation.

Fix: add a link to your booking page or a short contact form and give it a title that says what the reader gets.

7. Experience written as outcomes

Duties describe a job, outcomes describe a person.

Fix: rewrite your current role in two or three lines with results, numbers or named clients where you can share them.

8. Linked company pages

Linked company pages show logos and make the roles look real.

Fix: link every role to its company page and create a page for your own company if you do not have one.

9. Four or more posts in 30 days

A profile with no recent posts looks abandoned, even if it is well written.

Fix: aim for at least one post a week and keep a simple schedule you can actually follow.

10. Posts about your buyers' problems

Posts that only announce company news speak to nobody outside your team.

Fix: write about problems your buyers face and what you have learned solving them.

11. Three or more outside recommendations

Recommendations are proof written by someone else.

Fix: ask three clients, investors or partners and tell them the one thing you would like them to mention.

12. A recommendation from the last year

An old recommendation says you were good once.

Fix: ask for a fresh one after your next successful project, while it is still on the client's mind.

Why founder profiles are judged differently

Most LinkedIn profile checkers are built for job seekers and recruiters, so they score keywords and completeness. A founder's profile has a different job. It has to earn trust from people who may become customers, investors, hires or partners, usually before any conversation has started. That is why this test looks at proof, clarity and recent activity rather than keyword density. We built it from the checks we run on founder profiles at BeNoStranger, where we help founders build credibility on LinkedIn.

If you would rather have a founder look at it with you, book a free LinkedIn profile audit. When the profile is ready, our LinkedIn ghostwriting and LinkedIn personal branding services keep the activity side going.

How this tool works and what it does not do

The Stranger Test runs in your browser. It does not connect to LinkedIn, log in to your account or read your profile, so nothing can be scraped or changed. It is not affiliated with LinkedIn. It is also not the same thing as LinkedIn's own Social Selling Index, which measures your activity inside LinkedIn. This test measures how credible your profile looks to someone who lands on it from outside.

Frequently asked questions

Is The Stranger Test free?

Yes. It is free, needs no login and shows your score straight away.

Does it connect to my LinkedIn account?

No. You answer twelve questions about your own profile and the score is calculated in your browser.

What is a good LinkedIn profile score?

For this test, 70 or above means your profile reads as credible. Under 40 means a stranger will struggle to understand what you do.

Is this the same as LinkedIn's SSI score?

No. The Social Selling Index is LinkedIn's own measure of your activity on the platform. The Stranger Test checks how credible your profile looks to an outsider.

Can I use it if I am not a founder?

Yes. CEOs, consultants and senior leaders can use it as well. The checks are written with founders in mind, so some wording may need adapting.

How often should I re-check my profile?

Once a quarter is plenty, or after you change your banner, headline or About.

Will a high score get me more clients?

No score can promise that. A strong profile removes reasons for a buyer to hesitate, but results also depend on what you post and who you reach.
